Helen Thomas was born in Winchester, Kentucky, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where she attended public schools and went on to Wayne State University. She worked as a copy worker for the old Washington Daily News after graduating from college. Helen Thomas became a member of the Washington Press Corps and United Press International in 1943.

Helen Thomas worked for UPI for 12 years, starting her day at 5:30 a.m. to write radio news. She eventually covered federal government news, including the FBI and Capitol Hill, for a number of years.
