Heather Leigh Whitestone McCallum (born February 24, 1973, in Dothan, Alabama) was the first deaf Miss America winner, having lost most of her hearing at the age of 18 months. Heather discovered about Helen Keller, a young lady from Alabama who would permanently impact her life when she was in fourth grade. Keller became a role model for her.
She couldn't keep up with her schoolwork and began to slip behind her classmates. She requested that her family enroll her in a special school where she could catch up with her classmates. She learned two grade levels every year at the Central Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis, Missouri.
