About Heather Mac Donald
Heather Mac Donald Biography
Heather Mac Donald is a John M. Olin Fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a City Journal contributing editor. She also received the Bradley Prize for Outstanding Intellectual Achievement in 2005. Mac Donald's work at City Journal has covered a wide range of issues, including national security, immigration, policing and racial profiling, homelessness and homeless advocacy, educational policy, New York courts, and business improvement districts. Her work has also appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, New Republic, Partisan Review, The New Criterion, Public Interest, and Academic Questions. Her book The Burden of Bad Ideas, a compilation of articles from City Journal, examines the repercussions of the counterculture's devastating march across America's institutions in the 1960s. Her second book, Are Cops Racist? (another City Journal anthology), explores police operations, the debate over so-called racial profiling, and the anti-profiling lobby's negative impact on black Americans. Her most recent book, The Immigration Solution: A Better Plan Than Today's, cowritten with Victor Davis Hanson and Steven Malanga, examines the consequences of broken immigration rules and provides a realistic solution to secure the country's porous borders. Mac Donald, a non-practicing lawyer, clerked for the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, previously worked as an attorney-adviser in the Office of General Counsel at the United States Environmental Protection Agency and as a volunteer with the Natural Resources Defense Council in New York City. She has testified before the United States House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Civil and Constitutional Rights; the United States House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Claims; the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; and the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homicide. Because of her City Journal writings on education, she was named to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's task group on the City University of New York in 1998. In 2004, she received the Civilian Valor Award from the New Jersey State Law Enforcement Officers Association. The New York State Shields gave her the 2008 Integrity in Journalism award. She also received the Center for Immigration Studies' Eugene Katz Award for Excellence in Immigration Coverage in 2008. She also appears often on FOX News, CNN, and other television and radio shows. Mac Donald obtained her B.A. in English from Yale University, after which she won a Mellon Fellowship to Cambridge University, where she earned her M.A. in English and studied in Italy with the help of a Clare College study grant. Her law degree is from Stanford University. Heather Mac Donald is a New York City-based artist.
