Heather Booth Biography

Heather Booth is a civil rights leader, feminist, and political consultant from the United States who has been praised for her effective engagement in progressive issues. During her college years, she was active in both the civil rights and feminist movements. She's dedicated her career to feminism, community organizing, and progressive politics since then. She has worked as an organizer since the 1960s when she was involved in the civil rights, anti-Vietnam War, and women's movements. She founded JANE, an illegal abortion business that existed before Roe v. Wade. She founded the Midwest Academy (www.midwestacademy.com), which trains social change leaders and organizers, and is currently its President. She has worked on and directed political campaigns, and she was the Democratic National Committee's Training Director. She was the Director of the NAACP National Voter Fund in 2000, and she was instrumental in increasing African American voter turnout by over 2 million voters. She served as the principal consultant for the Campaign for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, which was founded in 2005. She was the director of the AFL-Health CIO's Care Campaign in 2008. She led the effort to approve President Obama's first budget in 2009. She was the founding director of Americans for Banking Reform in 2010, a group dedicated to regulating the financial sector. She was the national organizer for the marriage equality campaign following the Supreme Court ruling in 2013. She served as a strategic advisor to the Citizenship Alliance (the largest coalition of the immigration reform campaign). She worked as the Field Director for Americans for Tax Fairness, an organization dedicated to preventing tax cuts for millionaires that might result in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and education. She is a member of the Democracy Partners consulting firm.
