Heather Berlin Biography

Dr. Heather Berlin serves as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York where she works as a distinguished cognitive neuroscientist and clinical psychologist. She investigates brain functions related to impulse control and compulsive behaviors and consciousness and unconscious processes and creativity through fMRI and neuropsychological testing and deep brain stimulation trials to develop new treatments.

Heather received her clinical training at Weill Cornell and Icahn School of Medicine before developing a holistic therapeutic approach which combines CBT with mindfulness and humanistic methods to support patients across all ages who have anxiety and mood disorders and OCD.

Through her passion for science communication she co-hosts StarTalk All‑Stars with Neil deGrasse Tyson and has produced successful TV shows including PBS’s Your Brain and Science Goes to the Movies and Discovery Channel’s Superhuman Showdown. She co-created and performed in Off the Top and Impulse Control which presented complex neuroscience concepts through entertaining stage productions at the off-Broadway and Edinburgh Fringe festivals. Heather has appeared on BBC, History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, TEDx, and in Bill Nye: Science Guy.

She dedicates her public service to the National Academy of Sciences’ Science & Entertainment Exchange and AAAS committees while working to eliminate mental health stigma and promote women in STEM fields. The American Neuropsychiatric Association and the Borderline Personality Disorder Alliance and the International Neuropsychoanalysis Society’s Clifford Yorke Prize and Stony Brook University’s “40 Under Forty” have all recognized her academic work with prestigious awards.
