Hayat Sindi Biography

Hayat Sindi is the co-founder and director of Diagnostics For All, a non-profit that combines biotechnology and microfluidics to develop low-cost, easy-to-use point-of-care diagnostics for the 60 percent of the developing world that lives outside of the reach of urban hospitals and medical infrastructures. Sindi's major goal as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, where she works with Professor George Whitesides at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, is to create and implement technologies to enhance healthcare in poor countries. Sindi received her Ph.D. from Cambridge University, where she was named Senior Lecturer in the International School of Medicine, where she specialized in Pre-Clinical Education and Public Affairs of the Cambridge Overseas Medical Program. Sindi was the recipient of HRH Prince Khaled Al-Mekkah Faisal's Al Mukaram prize for scientific innovation in 2010. The National Geographic Society designated her an Emerging Explorer in 2011. Sindi was also the first non-profit to win the $100K Enterprise Competition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as the Harvard Enterprise Competition, making her team the first to win both awards in the same year.
