The series was adapted into a well-received film of the same name. Pekar self-published the series until Dark Horse Comics took it over in the early 1990s. Pekar was awarded the American Book Award for the series in 1987, and Dark Horse published a special issue in 2001 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of American Splendor.
He published The Finest of American Splendor, an anthology of his best work, in 2005.
