Harvey Molotch is a Professor of Sociology and Metropolitan Studies at New York University, where he does research on urban expansion, security, and product design and development. He has also studied topics in the news media, art sociology, neighborhood racial integration, and environmental sociology.

His books include Urban Fortunes (co-written with John Logan) and Where Stuff Comes From: How Toasters, Toilets, Cars, Computers, and a Whole Lot of Other Things Got Their Shapes. Toilet: Public Restrooms and the Politics of Sharing is a new book edited by Molotch and NYU PhD student Laura Noren (NYU Press, 2010).
