Harry Leibowitz Biography

Harry Leibowitz is a philanthropist, a speaker, and a businessman. Leibowitz grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where his family resided in an old cottage on Coney Island where 10 families used the communal restroom facilities throughout World War II and until the early 1950s. Leibowitz was 14 years old when his father died, and he had to work to support his family. He acquired a tremendous work ethic and an understanding of the situation of children born into difficult circumstances while working overnight in a bakery and then going to school all day. Despite his challenges, he went on to achieve a Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. before joining Procter & Gamble. Leibowitz departed P&G as a Brand Manager in the Bar Soap Division after a little over 5 years. He subsequently moved to work for ESMARK in several global operations before returning to the United States and founding his own Research and Consulting firm. During his career, Leibowitz became recognized for his energetic public speaking style, and he was called to participate as a Keynote speaker at several conferences and conventions. He also contributed to a number of professional and business magazines by writing and publishing articles. Years of business travel throughout the world exposed him to the condition of children in impoverished nations, and it left an indelible effect on him. Leibowitz had an epiphany in 1996 while recovering from cancer surgery at the age of 55. While watching the Pulitzer Prize announcements on television, he observed that, while there was a Pulitzer for art and literature, a Nobel for science and peace, and an Oscar for movies, there were no honors for people who worked diligently and selflessly to help children in need all over the globe. Leibowitz was inspired by this discovery, and he went on to start Globe of Children, pledging to devote the remainder of his life to building a distinguished awards program to assist social changemakers who aid children in need all around the world. He set out to develop a "gold standard" using his P&G knowledge in philanthropy. The World of Children Award, now in its 15th year, is widely referred to in the news as the Nobel Prize for child advocacy...high praise indeed. Today, Leibowitz uses all of his business abilities, as well as his great public speaking style, to inspire people all around the world. Leibowitz is a frequent speaker on children's concerns, charity as a business tool, and ethics at colleges and conferences in the United States and overseas. He was honored with the P&G Alumni Humanitarian Award in 2007. In 2006, he was awarded the Reclaiming Youth International Child Advocacy Award, and in 1999, he was awarded the Starr Commonwealth Child Advocacy Award. Kenneth Cole's book AWEARNESS (sic), as well as Drs. Frank LaFasto and Carl Larson's book The Humanitarian in Each of Us, have both highlighted him. Today, he and his wife, World of Children co-chair Kay-Isaacson Leibowitz, share their time between residences in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and Tuscany, Italy. Kay is one of America's top fashion CEOs, and despite her retirement, she continues to be in great demand, serving on the boards of directors of two publicly traded companies: GUESS (NYSE) and Coldwater Creek (NASDAQ). Leibowitz continues to work with a restricted group of firms on marketing and strategic concerns, including numerous tech start-ups.
