Harris Wofford Biography

Harris Wofford, a former United States Senator from Pennsylvania, chair of America's Promise, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and Special Assistant to President John F. Kennedy, has devoted much of his life to making citizen service a common expectation and experience for all Americans. Mr. Wofford was instrumental in developing and enacting the groundbreaking legislation that established AmeriCorps, the Learn and Serve America program, and the Corporation for National and Community Service. In 1997, he played a key role in arranging The Presidents' Summit for America's Future. Mr. Wofford served as special assistant to President John F. Kennedy and head of the White House Sub-Cabinet Group on Civil Rights from 1961 to 1962 after helping to establish the Peace Corps. He also served as Rev. Theodore Hesburgh's counsel on the first United States Commission on Civil Rights and as a trustee of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Mr. Wofford served as president of both the State University of New York's new College at Old Westbury (1966–70) and Bryn Mawr College (1966–70). (1970-78). Mr. Wofford is also a member of the National Commission on Service-Learning, which is led by Senator John Glenn. He is also a board member of Youth Service America and the Points of Light Foundation. Mr. Wofford established and headed the working group on human needs and faith-based community projects in 2000. He has written a number of books, including Of Kennedys and Kings: Making Sense of the Sixties (1980). Senator Wofford and his late wife Clare co-wrote the book India Afire in 1950, which reported on India's first year of independence and urged the American civil rights movement to embrace Gandhi's approach of nonviolent direct action.
