About Hahrie Han

Hahrie Han Biography

Hahrie Han serves as the Inaugural Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute while holding the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Professor of Political Science and Faculty Director of the P3 Research Lab at Johns Hopkins University. Her academic work examines organizing activities together with movements and civic engagement and democratic systems through research on how social movements and civic associations create participation opportunities that lead to social and political change.  

Han received five book awards together with multiple scholarly publications throughout her career. Knopf published her most recent book about American faith and racial dynamics through the lens of evangelical megachurches in 2024. The book received two significant year-end accolades from The New York Times and The New Yorker by earning spots on their lists of 100 Notable Books and Recommended Books respectively for 2024.  

The American Political Science Review together with American Sociological Review Nature Human Behavior PNAS and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) have published her academic research.  

Han received two notable honors in 2022 when she became an American Academy of Arts and Sciences member and the Schwab Foundation named her its 2022 Social Innovation Thought Leader of the Year.  

Through her academic work Han co-founded two organizations to connect academic research with real-world implementation: the Center for Democracy and Organizing and the Project on Public Leadership and Action at Wellesley College.  

Hahrie Han was born in Houston Texas to Korean immigrant parents. Han completed her undergraduate studies at Harvard University with a major in American History and Literature in 1997 before obtaining her Ph.D. in American Politics at Stanford University in 2005. She lives in the current period in Baltimore Maryland.
