Guy Marcus Biography

I am a Physics PhD student at Johns Hopkins University where my studies are supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and a Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship. Under the purview of the Institute for Quantum Matter I use neutron scattering techniques complemented by theoretical work to understand how the topological properties of magnetic or electronic structure influence the dynamical properties of quantum materials. I am currently focused on skyrmions which constitute a new phase of matter and have great potential for applications in magnetic memory and other spintronic devices. On the whole I am most interested in answering the questions in quantum condensed matter that lie at the boundary of theory and experiment while also having both fundamental and practical relevance. As an undergraduate I worked on a few different research projects. The highlights were: 1) experimental studies using 3D printing and stereoscopic video imaging to measure various properties of fluid turbulence for which I was awarded the 2013 Leroy Apker Award and 2) theoretical and computational studies of the dynamics of charged particles in a Paul trap for which I received an Honorable Mention for the 2011 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
