Guy Hoffman Biography

Dr. Guy Hoffman is a co-director of the IDC Media Innovation Lab and an assistant professor in the School of Communication at IDC Herzliya. He previously worked as a research fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Hoffman earned his Ph.D. in human-robot interaction from MIT and his M.Sc. in computer science from Tel Aviv University. He also went to Parsons School of Design in New York City to study animation. His research interests include human-robot interaction and cooperation, robot embodied cognition, HRI and multi-agent MDPs, nonverbal communication in HRI, entertainment, theatre, and musical performance robotics, and non-humanoid robot design. Hoffman created the first human-robot collaborative theatre performance and the first real-time improvising human-robot Jazz duet, among other things. Hoffman created a number of robots, notably "AUR," a robotic desk light that won the IEEE International Robot Design Competition. In 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010, his research articles were recognized with Best Paper honors at HRI and robotics conferences. He was the software and animation lead on the World Expo Digital Water Pavilion, which was named one of TIME magazine's "Best Inventions of the Year," and he was commissioned to illustrate the New York Times' "Week in Review" title page. Hoffman's work has been featured in CNN, the BBC, The New York Times, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Haaretz, Science, the New Scientist, PBS, NPR, and Comedy Central, among other publications. He was named one of Israel's most promising researchers under 40 in both 2010 and 2012.
