About Guy Hamilton
Guy Hamilton Biography
Guy Hamilton was born in Paris to English parents in 1922. He remained in France until his late teens, shortly before the outbreak of World War II. He began his career as an assistant to French filmmaker Julien Duvivier before coming to London to work for Paramount Studios. When the war started, he joined the Royal Navy, but when it was over, he went right back into cinema. Guy had the good fortune to work as an assistant director under renowned filmmaker Carol Reed. He worked on Fallen Idol and the famous classic The Third Man, both of which had a team that included future 007 director John Glen. Carol Reed took a like to Guy and hired him as a director for the B-movie The Ringer in 1952. Throughout the 1950s, Guy continued to work on low-budget films, finally landing the director's chair for The Devil's Disciple, starring Laurence Olivier, Kirk Douglas, and Burt Lancaster. After a run of blockbusters, Bond producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman approached him about directing Dr. No. Guy declined the opportunity, instead directing The Party's Over. However, the picture was a censorship catastrophe, and Guy's name was removed from the production. Terence Young was unable to direct Goldfinger in 1964, so Guy Hamilton was invited to take over. This time, he agreed and played a significant role in the success of one of the greatest films of all time. Terence Young returned for Thunderball, while Guy remained with producer Harry Saltzman, directing Funeral in Berlin alongside Michael Caine and The Battle of Britain alongside Laurence Olivier and Robert Shaw. Guy returned to the Bond franchise for three more films: Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die, and The Man with the Golden Gun. After leaving the Bond family, he continued directing, including two Agatha Christie adaptations, before retiring from the profession in 1989 with Try This One on for Size. Goldfinger is a James Bond film directed by Ian Fleming (1964) Diamonds are eternal (1971) Let die and live (1973) The Man with the Golden Gun is a film based on the novel of the same name (1974)
