Gurcharan Das Biography

Mr Das resides in New Delhi. He is a management consultant, author, writer, and pundit who was once a top executive at Procter & Gamble. He was the Chief Executive Officer of Procter & Gamble India and Vice President for Asia before finishing his business career as the head of strategic planning in the United States. He frequently lectures about India's economy, management problems, and his hopeful perspective of India's future at international business conferences hosted in India and abroad, as well as universities and other venues. He also counsels international businesses on how to embrace globalization and build India strategy. Mr Das writes a Sunday column for The Times of India and is occasionally interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Time, and Newsweek. He is well known for his globally renowned book India Unbound: The Social and Economic Revolution from Independence to the Global Information Age (Penguin), which tracks the developments in India over the last fifty years; an important insider's road map to India. Subsequently, he published The Elephant Paradigm: India Wrestles with Change (Penguin), an essay collection that examines an ancient civilization's reawakening to the spirit - and promise - of its youth. His most recent book, The Difficulty of Being Good; The Subtle Art of Dharma (Penguin), seeks to address the age-old question, "Why be good?" and may be applicable to many of today's challenges, from political strategy to corporate decisions and beyond. Gurcharan Das also writes books and plays, including A Fine Family. I am not aware of any other book that analyzes the influence of India's economic policies on its growth throughout the post-independence period as analytically, rationally, and graphically as this one does. Between being CEO of Procter & Gamble India and Vice President of Procter & Gamble Far East, he became Chairman and Managing Director of Richardson Hindustan Limited (1981-5) and then Vice President, Procter & Gamble Far East (1985 and 1992). He was most recently the Managing Director, Strategic Planning at Procter & Gamble Worldwide (1992-5). He retired from a successful 30-year corporate career to become a full-time writer.
