Gur Huberman Biography

Gur Huberman has been the Robert G. Kirby Professor of Behavioral Finance at Columbia Business School since 1989. He formerly taught at Tel Aviv University and the University of Chicago. Between 1993 and 1995, he was a Vice President at JP Morgan Investment Management, where he was in charge of quantitative equities trading research. In that position, he also assisted in the development of tax-aware tactics for the private bank. In 1980, he received his PhD (with distinction) in operations research from Yale, and in 1975, he received his B.Sc. (cum laude) in mathematics from Tel Aviv University. Professor Huberman's written work is extensively read and cited, and it covers a wide variety of topics in finance and economics. He made contributions to the theory of the equilibrium return-risk tradeoff, the theory of contracts, the study of individuals' portfolio selection, particularly in the context of retirement savings, the theory of liquidity and trading, and the theory of behavioral finance. Professor Huberman was the International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Finance's inaugural managing editor. His co-authored article was awarded the Smith-Breeden Prize for Distinguished Paper in the Journal of Finance in 2006. He was a member of Morgan Stanley Equity Market Microstructure Research's Academic Advisory Board.
