A Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys concert is unlike any other in terms of capturing the essence of native American country music. Gunnar Nybald writes the band's music from the seat of a tractor, where he still farms the family apple and plum orchards he's worked all his life. Joe Rood, his songwriting partner, has been a buddy since high school, when they were co-captains of the football team in Kent City, Michigan. Gunnar and hometown pal Rob Mason (bass, harmony vocals) formed the band with Rood while attending Michigan State University's agricultural program. They were joined by guitarist Shane Grehan (Alpena, MI), drummer Joe Connolly (Rochester Hills, MI), and keyboard/guitarist Chris Newberg (Rockford, MI). The band performed their debut concert as an opening act for Justin Moore in front of a sold-out audience. Since then, they've won WBCT B93's Honky Tonk Heroes battle of the bands, establishing themselves as Grand Rapids' finest new country band, and WYCD's Detroit Hoedown. They've opened for Colt Ford, Brantley Gilbert, Lady Antebellum, Kip Moore, David Allen Coe, and other artists. Gunnar & The Grizzly Boys released their 12-song debut independent album on July 23, 2010, staying loyal to their country origins. Country My Whole Life, a five-song EP, was published last year. GGB recently re-recorded “Sweet Tea” and “Guns” in Nashville with producer Ken Comer (Will Hoge), a former drummer for Uncle Tupelo and Wilco. Gunnar & the Grizzly Boys combine country and rock to deliver a taste of Michigan country based on good times and wanderlust. They go from an outlaw recounting his horseback ride across America to a true patriot expressing gratitude to our military. These six young men may be trying to make their way in the world, but they've nailed the technique of simply entertaining their fans in a way that allows them to let free and dirty up their boots!
