Gretchen Esther Whitmer is a politician and lawyer who has been serving as the 49th governor of Michigan since 2019, representing the Democratic Party. Before her governorship, she served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006 and as a member of the Michigan Senate from 2006 to 2015.
In the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial election, Whitmer defeated the Republican Attorney General of Michigan, Bill Schuette. Her administration has focused on healthcare and infrastructure. In February 2020, she was chosen to deliver the Democratic response to then-President Donald Trump's 2020 State of the Union Address.
