Gregory Berns Biography

Gregory Berns, MD, PhD is Emory University's Distinguished Professor of Neuroeconomics, where he also leads the Center for Neuropolicy and the Facility for Education and Research in Neuroscience. He is also a Psychology Department Professor and a founding member of the Society for Neuroeconomics. He is the author of two books: Satisfaction: The Science of Finding True Fulfillment (Henry Holt & Co., 2005) and Iconoclast: What Neuroscience Reveals About How To Think Differently (Harvard Business School Press, 2008), which Fast Company named one of the top business books of 2008. Berns' most recent book, How Dogs Love Us, was released in October 2013 and quickly became a WSJ and NYT best-seller. What It's Like to Be a Dog, his next book, will be released in September 2017. Dr. Berns specializes in the application of brain imaging technology to the study of human – and increasingly canine – motivation and decision-making. He has earned many funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Department of Defense, and he has published more than 70 peer-reviewed original research publications. Dr. Berns' study has been widely publicized, with pieces appearing in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Money, Oprah, Forbes, The Financial Times, The New Scientist, Wired, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times. Berns has spent the last three years pursuing his ambition of utilizing fMRI to understand what dogs truly think. Berns' group, in collaboration with a dog trainer, taught a team of volunteer canines to remain motionless in the MRI. The data they are gathering is offering astonishing insights into how our canine companions' brains operate, and scientists are discovering confirmation that dogs truly love humans. They have therefore broken new ground in improving the rights of dogs. Berns is a co-founder of Dog Star Technologies, a firm that uses neuroscience to improve the dog-human bond.
