Grady is widely known for his groundbreaking work in software architecture, software engineering, and collaborative development environments. He has dedicated his life's work to the advancement of the art and science of software development. Grady was the Chief Scientist of Rational Software Corporation from its inception in 1981 until its sale by IBM in 2003. He is presently the Chief Scientist for Software Engineering at IBM Almaden Research Laboratory, where he continues to work on the Handbook of Software Architecture and oversees many initiatives in software engineering that are beyond the limits of immediate product horizons. Grady continues to work with clients on real-world challenges and has strong ties with academics and other research groups across the world. Grady is one of the original creators of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and a co-developer of numerous Rational products. Grady has worked as architect and architectural mentor for several complicated software-intensive systems in about every sector imaginable throughout the world. Grady is the best-selling author of six books, including the UML Users Guide and the landmark Object-Oriented Analysis and Design with Applications. He contributes an architectural piece to IEEE Software on a regular basis. Grady has written hundreds of publications about software engineering, including papers from the early 1980s that popularized the phrase and practice of object-oriented design (OOD), as well as papers from the early 2000s that popularized the word and practice of collaborative development environments (CDE). Grady is an IBM Fellow, an ACM Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, a World Technology Network Fellow, a Software Development Forum Visionary, and the recipient of three Jolt Awards as well as Dr. Dobb's Excellence in Programming award. Grady was a founder member of the Agile Alliance, the Hillside Group, and the Worldwide Institute of Software Architects, and he presently serves on the International Association of Software Architects' advisory board. He also serves on the editorial board of IEEE Software. Grady also serves on the board of the Computer History Museum, where he assisted in the establishment of work for the preservation of ancient software and has done many oral histories for luminaries such as John Backus, Fred Brooks, and Linus Torvalds. He formerly served on the Iliff School of Theology's board of directors. Grady earned his bachelor's degree in 1977 from the United States Air Force Academy and his master's degree in electrical engineering in 1979 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Grady resides in Maui and Colorado when he is not traveling, but he also lives electronically in Thornebridge as the avatar Alem Theas. Grady enjoys reading, traveling, singing, Celtic harp playing, and kayaking.
