Grace Coddington resigned down as the creative director of American Vogue at the start of 2016. She was promoted to creative director-at-large, a newly established position that allowed her to engage on outside projects for the first time since joining the newspaper in 1988. Coddington told BoF, "I'm not running away from Vogue since it has opened so many possibilities." “However, it will be enjoyable to collaborate, as well as to go out and deliver presentations to people.” Coddington began her modeling career in the swinging 1960s in London. She was included in Vogue's "young ideas" section after winning a modeling competition. Coddington, or "The Cod," made a name for herself in London, due in no little part to Vidal Sassoon's creation of his classic five-point cut on her "wonderful bones and magnificent neck." Coddington's modeling career was cut short when she was 26 due to a car accident; nevertheless, because she worked in front of the camera at a time when models were responsible for their own hair, makeup, and accessories, she was able to improve a shot by styling herself. Coddington succeeded right away and continued to do so, rising through the ranks of British Vogue to become senior fashion editor in 1976. Coddington left Vogue in 1987 to become the design director of Calvin Klein. Coddington was the first European fashion editor to properly understand American design, according to Klein afterward. In 1988, Coddington was asked to join US Vogue as creative director by Anna Wintour, a former colleague. “I was over the moon when she accepted,” Wintour told Mark Holgate. Coddington decided to explore other initiatives while remaining active as editor-at-large after three decades at the magazine. “It's just a different approach.” I'm not planning on retiring anytime soon. Coddington told BoF, "I don't want to sit around." Her romantic, rich, and intricate aesthetic is founded in powerful visual storytelling that is driven by beauty rather than metaphor.
