Gordon Moore, a Silicon Valley legend, spent the greater part of his life founding and leading two of the country's most significant technological firms. In 1968, he co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor and subsequently left the business to create Intel. He was the company's chief executive and chairman from 1987 to 1997. After stepping down from the board of Gilead Sciences this year, the namesake of Moore's Law—which states that computer power will double every two years—spends much of his time philanthropically. Gordon and Betty Moore established the Gordon and Betty Moore Charity in 2001 with a contribution of 175 million Intel shares; the foundation today has over $5.3 billion in assets. Every year, it distributes over $250 million to assist sustainability, environmental protection, healthcare, and scientific research. The foundation unveiled its Patient Care Program last year, with a pledge of $500 million over ten years for awards to encourage patient care innovation. The organization is the major supporter of the world's largest telescope, the Thirty Meter Telescope, which is now under development in Hawaii. It has committed more than $50 million to the design and pledged $200 million for the telescope's development over a nine-year period in 2007. Moore obtained a Ph.D. in chemistry and physics from the California Institute of Technology, where he is a life trustee, after studying chemistry at U.C. Berkeley.
