Gordon Moore, a Silicon Valley legend, spent the greater part of his life founding and leading two of the country's most significant technological firms. In 1968, he co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor and subsequently left the business to create Intel. He was the company's chief executive and chairman from 1987 to 1997.
After stepping down from the board of Gilead Sciences this year, the namesake of Moore's Law—which states that computer power will double every two years—spends much of his time philanthropically. Gordon and Betty Moore established the Gordon and Betty Moore Charity in 2001 with a contribution of 175 million Intel shares; the foundation today has over $5.3 billion in assets.
