He dropped out of college without receiving a diploma. He became a city council politician in the tiny municipality of Katrineholm after joining the SAP. He was elected Member of Parliament in 1979 but returned to municipal politics from 1985 to 1989 as the Municipal Commissioner (kommunalrd) of Katrineholm. He was appointed Minister of Schools in the Ministry of Education in 1989 and Minister of Finance in 1994. The goal of most of this work was to achieve a healthy financial balance in the economy. Persson was selected to head the country against deputy prime minister Mona Sahlin in 1996. Persson was passionate about reducing unemployment, boosting immigrant integration, and safeguarding the environment.
