Godfrey Gao was born in Taipei Taiwan to a Taiwanese father and a mother from Malaysia. He moved to Vancouver Canada during his childhood and later studied at Capilano University in North Vancouver.

Gao's father is Shanghainese but grew up in Taiwan while his mother is a Peranakan from George Town.Since returning to Taiwan to work as a model in 2004 Gao has appeared in several TV dramas and films. He played Magnus Bane in the film adaption of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
