In 1980, Norman Connors assisted Glenn Jones in making the transition by featuring him on a song from his LP Take It to the Limit. Jones later toured with Connors and performed on Mr. C.'s album. In 1983, he signed with RCA and released a mini-album, I Am Somebody, which charted as a Top 30 R&B single.

The following album, Finesse, was produced by Leon Sylvers and yielded Jones his first true success, the number three R&B single Show Me. The theme song for the 1984 television series Finder of Lost Loves was Jones' duet with Dionne Warwick. He also performed Talk Me Into It, which appeared in the film Youngblood.
