After a year-long struggle with cancer, Giovanni Arrighi, the George Armstrong Kelly Professor of Sociology and a renowned specialist in the disciplines of world-systems analysis and historical sociology, died. Arrighi began his career as a teacher in Zimbabwe (1963-1966) and Tanzania (1967-1969), where he authored seminal works on Africa's political economy, which shaped scholarly discussions for decades.
Giovanni, who was born in Milan in 1937 and obtained his doctorate in economics from the Universitá Bocconi in 1960, joined Johns Hopkins in 1998 to lead the comparative-historical group in the Sociology Department.
