Gillian Tett is a British journalist, author, and anthropologist renowned for her work at the Financial Times, a UK daily newspaper focusing on business and current economic affairs. She attended Clare College, Cambridge, earning a B.A. in Archaeology and Anthropology before undertaking a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology. She decided to pivot to journalism after being dissatisfied with her chosen field of studyâs postmodernist direction.
In 1993, she joined the Financial Times as a correspondent from the former Soviet Union and Europe. Tett has held various roles, including Tokyo bureau chief and U.S. managing editor for the publication, where she gained fame for predicting the 2007â08 financial crisis through ethnographic research at J.P. Morgan. Her bestselling book, âFoolâs Goldâ (2009), detailed the crisis and won the Spearâs Financial Book of the Year. Other notable works include âSaving the Sunâ (2003), âThe Silo Effectâ (2015), and âAnthro-Visionâ (2021), which won the Porchlight Business Book Award.
