George Whalin has considerable and direct retail experience. He began his job on the sales floor and rose through the ranks. He founded and operated the first Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California, in the 1960s. He sold instruments to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jackson Five, Grateful Dead, and a slew of other famous and lesser-known artists.
He became the senior training manager for a 125-store consumer electronics chain after quitting the musical instrument industry.
