George Stalk Biography

Since 2008, George Stalk has been a BCG Fellow and senior adviser at The Boston Consulting Group. George's study as a Fellow is focused on how businesses may better strategize in times of high uncertainty. Most businesses make minimal changes to their tried-and-true business strategies and worldwide supply networks, adjusting mainly to save money or enhance efficiency. George is focused on how they might better combat inertia's hazards. George began his career at BCG in 1978. He rose through the ranks of the firm's Strategy, Consumer, Organization, and Operations practices to become a senior partner and managing director. He has spent his consulting career advising the senior management of a variety of firms across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, primarily in manufacturing, technology, and consumer products. George's corporate strategy ideas have impacted the current business world. His early years at BCG were spent in Tokyo, where he helped develop BCG's groundbreaking concept of "time-based competition" and George's best-selling book Competing Against Time: How Time-Based Competition Is Reshaping Global Markets. This forward-thinking thought leadership has aided numerous businesses in discovering new methods to gain a sustained competitive edge. George is also the author of Kaisha: The Japanese Corporation and Hardball: Are You Playing to Win or Play to Play? In 2008, he published Five Future Strategies You Need Right Now: Memo to the CEO, which was his most recent book. He was named a fellow of the Strategic Management Society in 2008, joining BCG founder Bruce Henderson as the society's only professional consultant. George is an adjunct professor of strategic management at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, as well as a fellow of the Strategic Management Society and a senior fellow of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
