George Rust Biography

As a family practice physician, I have committed my career to improving healthcare access, quality, and outcomes for low-income and uninsured populations. I am board-certified in Family Practice as well as Preventive Medicine. I've spent the last two decades at Morehouse School of Medicine teaching, doctoring, researching, and establishing initiatives (MSM). I am currently a Family Medicine Professor with a dual faculty position in the Departments of Community Health and Preventive Medicine, as well as the founding Director of the National Center for Primary Care and Faculty Development program. In addition, I am the board chair of the Atlanta Community Access Coalition and co-chair of Georgia's Minority Health Advisory Council, where I played a significant role in the 2008 Georgia Health Disparities Report. I've been heavily involved in the conception and preparation of our Annual Primary Care and Prevention Conference for the past 13 years. By creating training programs and health quality-outcomes research collaborations between MSM and networks of community and migrant health clinics, I have established bridges between the academic sphere and the front lines of primary care. Over 50 peer-reviewed papers on primary care, health inequalities, and underserved communities have been published by me. In 2007, I won the Disease Management Association of America's (DMAA) national leadership award, and in 2009, I got the Georgia Asian Pacific Islander Community Coalition's (ACT) ACT award for my committed time, efforts, and activism (GAAPICC). Honors Master Teacher & Leader Award, Morehouse School of Medicine Faculty Development Program, 2004. Morehouse School of Medicine (MSoM) Family Practice Residency Program received the William H. Cleveland Faculty of the Year Award for Clinical Teaching in 2006. Outstanding Mentor Award, Morehouse School of Medicine Masters of Clinical Research Program, 2006. Outstanding Physician Leadership in Disease Management, Disease Management Association of America (DMAA), Sept. 2007. Co-Chair, Georgia Minority Health Advisory Council, Department of Community Health, 2006-2008 Pan Asian Community Services and the Georgia Asian Pacific Islander Community Coalition received the ACT Award for Leadership in Health for Asian Communities in 2009.
