George Packer is a prolific journalist, novelist, and playwright. He is a staff writer at The Atlantic, having previously served as a staff writer at The New Yorker from 2003 to 2018. He is best known for his reporting and books on U.S. foreign policy, American politics, and culture. Key works include “The Assassins’ Gate: America in Iraq” (2005), a critical account of the Iraq War; "The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America” (2013), which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction; the biography “Our Man: Richard Holbrooke and the End of the American Century” (2019); and “Last Best Hope: America in Crisis and Renewal” (2021). He has also written several novels and a play. A Yale graduate and former Peace Corps volunteer in Togo, Packer focuses on politics, foreign affairs, and social change.
