George Mumford is a mindfulness specialist and former collegiate basketball player who specializes in assisting athletes with meditation. Mumford was an aspiring basketball player at the University of Massachusetts who was forced to retire due to injury. The painkillers he took to treat his injuries also numbed him to the loneliness he felt when he wasn't playing, leading to his addiction to heroin. Mumford enrolled in Dr. Jon Kabat-Mindfulness Zinn's Based Stress Reduction program and partnered with him to develop the Inner-city Stress Reduction Clinic in the early 1990s after years of making a meditation on and off the cushion the focus of his life and becoming clean. The Chicago Bulls were in trouble when Michael Jordan departed to pursue baseball in 1993. Coach Phil Jackson, a long-time mindfulness practitioner, reached out to Dr. Kabat-Zinn in search of someone who could teach mindfulness techniques to his struggling team—someone with credibility and who spoke his players' language. Jackson was introduced to Mumford via Kabat-Zinn, and their collaboration started. Mumford has worked with Jackson and several of the NBA title teams he has coached. His list of champion clients has grown to include business leaders, Olympians, and players from a variety of sports since then.
