He was widely considered as the greatest third baseman in the American League in the late 1940s and early 1950s. George Kell was a reliable batter and fielder. He hit over.300 nine times and led the league's third basemen in assists, total chances, and fielding % four times. He earned his only batting title in 1949 (.343), depriving Ted Williams his third Triple Crown; Williams had led the hitting race until the last week of the season. Kell went 2-for-3 on October 2, 1949, while Williams went hitless in two official at bats. Kell's final score was.3429, whereas Williams' was.3427. Kell batted.340 the next year, leading the league with 218 hits and 56 doubles, but lost the batting crown to Williams' teammate, Red Sox second baseman Billy Goodman. Kell batted.306 with 78 home runs and 870 runs batted in, 881 runs scored, 2054 hits, 385 doubles, 50 triples, 36 stolen bases, a.482 slugging average, and 621 walks for a.367 on base percentage in his career. Kell served as a play-by-play broadcaster after retiring as a player, first with the Orioles (1957) and CBS television (1958), and later with the Tigers (1959-1996). Kell also served on the Arkansas State Highway Commission for 10 years (1973-83). Kell is the owner of George Kell Motors in Newport, Arkansas. In 1983, George Kell was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
