George Howell Biography

George Howell is a CNN International anchor. He leads 'CNN Newsroom,' which airs on CNNI and CNN/US from the network's headquarters in Atlanta, from Friday through Sunday. Howell formerly worked for CNN as a national journalist in the network's Chicago office. In this capacity, he covered a number of significant U.S. stories, including the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, where he was the first CNN reporter on the scene, and the trial of George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. He has covered topics from the Midwest and the West Coast, such as the disastrous tornado outbreaks in Oklahoma City in the summer of 2013, the Midwest energy crisis in the winter of 2013, and the tragic Washington state mudslide in 2014. Howell was a correspondent for ABC station WSB in Atlanta before joining CNN. He previously worked at KREM in Spokane, Washington, KXAN in Austin, Texas, and KOMO and KIRO in Seattle, Washington, where he covered the Mount St. Helens eruption. In 2009, he launched breakingintobroadcasting.com, a website that provides assistance and guidance to aspiring journalists. Throughout his career, Howell has been recognized by the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, the New York Association of Black Journalists, and has received many Emmy nominations. Howell earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Texas in Austin. As a student, he was named a finalist in a national competition for excellence in journalism by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. He and his family live in Atlanta.
