George Dyson is a technological historian who has written on the development (and redevelopment) of the Aleut kayak (Baidarka), the evolution of digital computers and telecommunications (Darwin Among the Machines), and a road not taken into space (Darwin Among the Machines) (Project Orion). Turing's Cathedral, his most recent work, is a creation myth for the digital world, illuminating the shift from numbers that signify things to numbers that do things in the aftermath of World War II, as he sees it. Dyson, who is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, resides in Bellingham, Washington, and has given several talks and contributed articles to publications such as Scientific American, Nature, Forbes, Discover, Wired, and Make. Kenneth Brower's famous 1978 dual memoir The Starship and the Canoe juxtaposed his early exploits with those of his father, scientist Freeman Dyson. Dyson's career (he never completed high school but received an honorary degree from the University of Victoria) has been as difficult to categorize as his works. Dyson is currently returning to his deep interest in the Aleutian Islands' history and prehistory, as well as embarking on an unrestricted literary exploration of a possible future, pervaded (with the exception of a few remote island sanctuaries) by a true artificial intelligence that may not be as far away as we think.
