Gene Chandler Biography

He was a great performer and vocalist who embodied the casual, laid-back attitude that characterized early 1960s soul and R&B performers. He is most remembered for his 1962 hit Duke of Earl, but he also wrote and performed a number of other songs and collaborated with many of the greats in the soul and R&B industry, including Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler. Eugene Dixon had been singing since the early 1950s, initially with The Gaytones, and seemed to appear out of nowhere in 1962 when he announced himself to the world as The Duke of Earl. In 1957, he joined the Dukays, a doo-wop group that included James Lowe, Shirley Jones, Earl Edwards, and Ben Broyles, and swiftly rose to lead vocalist. He was recruited into the US Army and served in Germany for three years before returning to Chicago and rejoining his bandmates in 1960. The Dukays was given a recording deal by Chicago-based Nat Records through music industry contacts. The Girl Is Evil was the title of the first single. Nite Owl was released by Nat Records in 1961, and the band returned to the studio to record another tune.
