General Zinni entered the Marine Corps in 1961 after graduating from Villanova University and was commissioned as an infantry second lieutenant in 1965. He has served in a variety of leadership and staff positions, including platoon, company, battalion, regimental, Marine expeditionary unit, and head of the Marine Expeditionary Force.
Operations, training, special operations, counter-terrorism, and manpower billets were among his staff responsibilities. He's also taught tactics and operations at a number of Marine Corps colleges and was named a fellow of the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group. He's also served on the joint and combined staffs of task forces and unified commands.
