His stage name was inspired by his undergraduate acting professor, Beatrice Macleod, as well as a moving TV drama about a cerebral palsy victim named Gavin.
Gavin Macleod worked as an usher and elevator operator at Radio City Music Hall after relocating to New York City. Gavin Macleod moved to Los Angeles to pursue cinema and television after a successful Broadway debut in A HATFUL OF RAIN in 1956.
