Gavin Maloof serves as Vice Chairman of Maloof Companies, where he participates in all facets of the family's many commercial interests while also directing the sports and entertainment division. He is committed to sustaining and expanding the firm's national and worldwide significance, as well as leading the company into a new age of growth. Despite his youth in terms of professional sports and entertainment ownership, Gavin has a wealth of expertise. Gavin Maloof was designated president of the Houston Rockets at the age of 24 after his father, George J. Maloof, Sr., died in 1980. He was the youngest owner and operator in major professional sports history. Under Gavin's direction, the Rockets were immediately successful, reaching the NBA Finals for the first time in team history in 1981. The Rockets qualified for the postseason in all three seasons under the Maloof family's ownership, thanks to players like Moses Malone, Calvin Murphy, and Elvin Hayes. Gavin also served as team president during the Maloofs' ownership of the Birmingham Fire of the World League of American Football (WLAF) from 1990 to 1992, in addition to his front office management with the Rockets. Gavin has always prioritized his volunteer activities in the community. He has served on the boards of directors for a number of humanitarian organizations, notably those dedicated to children's welfare. Gavin was an accomplished football player at the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., and Trinity University in San Antonio, where he was an ardent sports lover and participant. In 1979, he earned a bachelor's degree in speech and communications from Trinity. He was honored into the New Mexico Military Institute Hall of Fame as one of the school's most accomplished alumni last year, a distinction conferred on only a few persons throughout the school's lengthy history. Gavin lives fewer than two miles from Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento. In his leisure time, he likes playing golf.
