Gary Locke Biography

Gary Faye Locke is a former diplomat, attorney, and American politician hailing from Washington State. He served as the 21st governor of Washington from 1997 to 2005 and was noteworthy for being the first Chinese-American and Asian American governor in the continental U.S. Prior to that, Locke served as the King County executive in 1993 and was elected to the Washington House of Representatives in 1982. During the Obama administration, he held the position of Secretary of Commerce from 2009 to 2011 and served as the U.S. Ambassador to China from 2011 to 2014, where he made history as the first Chinese American to hold the role. Known for his moderate Democratic views, Locke declined to run for re-election in 2004 after being re-elected in the gubernatorial election of 2000. In 2003, he was selected by the Democratic party to deliver their response to President George W. Bush's State of the Union address.
