Gary Gardia Biography

Gary began his hospice work as a volunteer over 25 years ago. Since then, he has served in a number of positions as a leader of teams and departments such as volunteers, social workers, bereavement, education, and Vice-President. Gary is a Certified Thanatologist (CT): Death, Dying, and Bereavement with the Association for Death, Education, and Counseling and has Master's degrees in Education and Social Work. Gary was awarded the Heart of Hospice Award by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) for establishing new programs to fulfill the needs of caregivers and the bereaved. Gary has also worked as a private practice psychotherapist with a focus on grieving and loss, personal growth and development, and drug misuse. Gary worked with NHPCO for 7 years, serving as the national section head for Volunteers and Volunteer Managers, as well as the section leader for Social Workers. He was involved in the development and growth of NHPCO's Manager Development Program, a complete education series for end-of-life care managers. His most recent venture as a co-creator and faculty member is the 2-day intensive program Leadership in Everyday Life: Confronting the Ego and Managing the Mind, which was created to help individuals in all walks of life achieve their potential. Gary has written extensively for NHPCO's publication Insights. He is the coauthor of the book Leadership in Everyday Life: It's Really All About You, as well as a chapter in the upcoming Oxford edition Textbook of Palliative Social Work. Gary is a regular keynote speaker and presenter at state and national conferences, delivering seminars and retreats that are both encouraging and challenging.
