He joined the Jesuit order and then quit it. At the age of 23, William F. Buckley, Jr. recruited him as a drama critic for National Review magazine. In 1961, he got his Ph.D. in classics from Yale. Wills received honorary degrees of L.H.D. from both the College of the Holy Cross and Bates College in 1982. (1995).

He began his adult life as a conservative, but as a result of his coverage of the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements in the 1960s, he grew increasingly liberal. Nixon Agonistes (1970), his biography of President Richard M. Nixon, put him on the definitive list of Nixon political opponents. Wills began teaching at Northwestern University's history department in 1980.
