Gail Simone is a comic book writer from the United States. Her other famous works include Secret Six, Welcome to Tranquility, The All-New Atom, Deadpool, and Wonder Woman. She is most known for writing DC's Birds of Prey. She was hired as the writer for Batgirl in 2011. Despite being dismissed from Batgirl by the title's incoming editor, Brian Cunningham, in December 2012, she was rehired on December 21 when DC received criticism from fans. In 2013, she signed a deal with Dynamite Entertainment to create a new Red Sonja series. Simone, a former hairdresser who studied theater in college, first gained fan attention through Women in Refrigerators, a website founded in 1999 by a small group of comics fans, including Simone, in response to a scene in Green Lantern #54 in which the titular hero's girlfriend, Alexandra DeWitt, is murdered and her corpse is stuffed into a refrigerator for the hero to find. The website was dedicated to finding female superheroes who had been slain, raped, or otherwise subjected to terrible humiliations as a narrative device for a male character. She was recognized into the Friends of Lulu's Female Comic Creator's Hall of Fame in 2009. Simone was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book for her work on Secret Six in 2010 and 2012. Simone received the first True Believers Comic Award for Roll of Honor/Comic Excellence in July 2014 at the London Film and Comic Con.
