Fruition's three primary singer-songwriters realized that their vocals naturally melded into lovely three-part harmonies the first time they ever produced music together. The Portland, Oregon-based quintet has evolved from a rootsy, string-centric ensemble to a full-fledged rock band with an effortless but strong grasp of soul, blues, and British Invasion era pop in the eight years since that unplanned busking performance. Fruition demonstrates the full impact of their newly broadened sound on their new album Labor of Love, balancing their more adventurous musicianship with refined, melody-minded songcraft. The album quietly conveys the sensation of being carried along on a trip, one that begins with the dobro, mandolin, and electric guitar driven title track, continues with the drowsy soul of “Santa Fe,” and develops into the grand balladry of “The Meaning.” “A similar topic for all three songwriters is trying to appreciate being on the road all the time but simultaneously feeling like you're losing out on the everyday living that most people get,” Leonard adds. Within that conflict is a nostalgic romanticism that pervades several of the album's tracks. “Most of the love songs are about those rare occasions when you get to be with the ones you love,” Anderson adds. “Other songs are about returning back to the people you love and dealing with the weird ways things change as a result of being apart.” Fruition went from busking on the street to scraping their way onto lower levels of festival lineups, to opening tours for bands like ALO and Greensky Bluegrass, and on to being invited to play bigger festivals with ever bigger billing on those lineups after releasing their debut EP Hawthorne Hoedown in 2008. Last year, they performed at Bonnaroo, Northwest String Summit, and Telluride Bluegrass, where Rolling Stone praised their "raucous originals packed with poignant lyrics and stadium-worthy intensity." This year, they'll share a Red Rocks bill with JJ Grey, Mofro, and The Infamous Stringdusters, as well as a full-fledged US tour. That breadth of traveling experience has slowly changed the band, allowing them to attain a sound they've always desired. “We all like to write on acoustic guitar and start things in the same stripped-down, folky type of way we always did,” Naja explains. “So where the tunes originate from hasn't altered all that much. What distinguishes us is where we let them go from there.”
