Fritz Zwahlen was born in a suburb of Berne, Switzerland's capital, in 1963. As the eldest of four children, he developed a lifelong love of cooking from his Austrian-born mother when he was still a toddler.
He felt the urge to go on to a more demanding role after completing a three-year apprenticeship as a cook at a small hotel near Berne. He joined the five-star Schweizerhof Hotel in Berne. During his time at the hotel, he realized that cooking was truly his calling.
