Fred Upton served in Congress as the representative for southwest Michigan's 6th congressional district from 1987-2023. He was the chair of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, which has oversight and investigative authority over energy, health care, the environment, telecommunications, commerce, manufacturing, and trade.
He has long advocated for a stronger focus on biomedical research in order to enhance public health. He and Rep. Diana DeGette founded the 21st Century Medicines program in 2014, a multi-year effort to bring together researchers, industry, and patients to accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery of life-saving cures. Upton served at President Ronald Reagan's Office of Management and Budget in the early 1980s.
