Fred D. Gray was born on December 14, 1930, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Nancy and Abraham Gray. He is an attorney, civil rights campaigner, and human rights, activist. He and his siblings were reared in a shotgun house in a segregated black neighborhood of the city as the youngest of five children. Gray enrolled at Nashville Christian Institute in 1947.
He attended Alabama State College after finishing seminary, paying for his school by working as a district manager for the Alabama Journal. Gray enrolled at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, for law school in 1951. In 1954, he received his law degree and began a practice in his hometown of Montgomery.
