Fred Chappell has written a dozen collections of poetry, two story collections, and eight novels. He was a native of Canton, North Carolina, and spent over 40 years as a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has won the Bollingen Prize in Poetry, the Aiken Taylor Prize, the T. S.
Eliot Prize, and the Roanoke-Chowan Poetry Prize seven times. From 1997 to 2002, he served as North Carolina's Poet Laureate.
