Frank Gardner is a British journalist, author, and retired Army Reserve officer. He has served as the BBC’s Security Correspondent, specializing in terrorism, defense, and global security since the 9/11 attacks. Educated at Marlborough College and the University of Exeter, he worked in banking in the Middle East before joining the BBC in 1995. He became the network’s first full-time Gulf correspondent and later its first full-time Middle East correspondent. In 2004, while reporting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he was shot six times by al-Qaeda gunmen, and his cameraman Simon Cumbers was killed. Gardner survived but was left partially paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair. He returned to reporting within a year. He is a bestselling author of the memoir "Blood and Sand" (2006) and the Luke Carlton spy thriller series, and holds an OBE for services to journalism.
