International Obesity and Diabetes Authority Dr. Francine Kaufman is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine and the Director of the Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Since 1980, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has sponsored Dr. Kaufman's research, which focuses on various facets of diabetes, including prevention, treatment, and complications. She is now the head of the NIH-funded STOPP-T2 studies, which are looking into methods to prevent and cure Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents (The TODAY study). She was also a principal investigator in the Diabetes Prevention Trial-Type 1 and is currently a researcher in TrailNet, an NIH project attempting to prevent Type 1 diabetes while preserving beta cell function. She has been awarded the Banting Medal for Service as well as the Outstanding Contribution to Children and Youth Award. Dr. Kaufman is one of just two pediatric endocrinologists in Southern California named in America's Top Doctors for the West Coast and Pacific area. She is also on the list of Best Doctors in America®. Author of Medical Publications Dr. Kaufman is the author of over 150 medical publications and has created numerous diabetic therapeutic breakthroughs, including Extend Bar, a snack bar containing uncooked cornstarch that is used as an appetite suppressant and a hypoglycemia preventative in diabetes. She is also a dedicated public champion who was key in the LA Unified School District prohibiting the sale of soda.
